Open Thread Summary

Thank you so much to everyone who responded to my open thread! Each of your suggestions were interesting.  The suggestions received were:
  1. Iron Man
  2. Venom
  3. Characters from the comic Rat Queens
  4. Flash and/or Arrow
  5. Hulk (possibly tutorial)
Of course,  I knew there was not going to be a unanimous character suggestion, and I really want to aim my blog posts in the direction of the reader, so I am going to attempt to produce each of your suggestions!  By the end of week I should have a new posting up.

Stay tuned!

Captain America

Captain America, also known as his everyday identity Steve Rogers, is the all american super soldier from Marvel Comics. His character was introduced in the early 1940s, when Marvel was still known as Timely Comics.  He soon became an icon during WWII.  There was a stint during the 50s where Captain America's story was discontinued, but he was brought back in the 60s and has since remained in publication as a popular character.  He is commonly known as the leader of Marvel's Avengers, a team of super heroes.

Captain America's costume is representative of the american flag.  It uses the same color scheme, and displays the same red and white stripes across his abdomen and around his shield.  A star sits on his chest and the center of the shield.  Instead of doing another recreation, I did an eye-look inspired by Captain America's costume.

 Products Used:

  • Urban Decay Primer Potion
  • NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk
  • NYX Retractable Lip Liner in Red
  • Urban Decay Shadow in Moonshadow
  • ColourPop Shadow in Liberty
  • Benefit Cosmetics They're Real Mascara
  • Ardell Glamour Lash Black 105
  • Benefit Erase Paste in Fair

This wasn't a look that I put a lot of thought into before hand, it was just something I decided to play around with.  It took about 10 minutes to do one eye while trying to decide on the style mid-creation.  In retrospect, the inner corner didn't turn out as well in photos, I would change this by adding more of the silver color here, and dragging it onto the inner corner of the bottom lash line.

Nevertheless, it is always fun to play around with colors I don't often wear!

Rorschach

Rorschach, also known as his alter ego Walter Kovacs, is a main character from DC Comic's Watchmen series.  He wears a mask made of fabric that resembles changing images of Rorschach inkblot tests.  He took up crimefighting while working in an undergarment factory.

This was a look I became inspired to recreate after flipping through one of the books.  It's another simple, fun look to do, as it only requires using two colors, and the imagination of the "inkblots" can really be personalized to your preference.

Products Used:

  • Spirit White Cream Makeup (Side Note: I would not recommend this product.  I bought it at a Spirit Halloween store when everything was marked down super cheap.  Unfortunately, the effect and quality are also cheap but you get what you pay for.  I would just like to inform my readers that this product was very dry after applying, resulting in an uneven finish, and numerous amounts of cracks.  Not ideal at all for this look).
  • NYX Retractable Eyeliner in Black
  • NYX Super Fat Eye Marker in Carbon Black (I used this when I rat out of the retractable liner)
  • Urban Decay Shadow in Blackout (Applied over the black eye makeup to help set)
  • NYX Setting Spray in Matte Finish

Honestly, the hat is a key component to Rorschach's look.  I'm wearing an old hat that once belonged to my grandfather.  If you don't have a hat like this lying around, I highly recommend finding one to complete this look.

Overall this was another quick look that only took about 15-20 minutes to complete.  It's fun to create your own inkblots, but to make this look appear as it does in the comic, you must keep your eyes closed.  So at times, when you must have your eyes open, be warned, the illusion is somewhat broken.  Nevertheless, it is a look, and a character, to enjoy.

Mary Jane Watson

Mary Jane Watson is a character from Marvel's Spiderman series.  She is an average woman with no super powers, and ends up becoming Peter Parker's love interest and, after a couple refusals, his wife. She knows of Peter's alter ego, and is often depicted as frustrated with his constant absences from her life due to crime fighting.

Having the poster of the image above on the right, I decided to recreate this look.  It is a quick and simple look that is sure to be a hit at costume parties and conventions.  Aside from the hair, this look is easy to recreate with makeup products that you already have!

Products Used:

My hair is the same shade of red, but to dramatize this look and add more length, I chose to wear Spirit Halloween's Sleek Red Wig.

Face
  • L'oreal Paris Magic Lumi primer
  • Benefit Erase Paste  in Fair
  • NYX Transulscent Finishing Powder
  • Ulta Automatic Eyeliner in Deep Brown (to simulate her prominent freckles)
Eyes
  • NYX The Curve Liner in Jet Black
  • Eyeko Black Magic masacara
  • Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion
  • Too Faced shadows in Heaven for the lid and Velvet Revolver for the crease
  • NYX Retractable Eyeliner in Black for bottom lash line
Lips
  • Ulta Super Shiny lipgloss in Starlet
Brows
  • Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade in Auburn
  • Applied with Ulta Brow Brush

Overall this look was super easy, and only took me about 10-15 minutes to complete. So go on and rock this character and your inner never-wants-to-be-tied-down, super-powerless, Spiderman-loving Mary Jane Watson!

Pop Art Comic

Pop art was a popular style of art found in comic books in the 1950s and 60s. The style uses bold black lines to outline features, and a technique called Ben-Day dots for colors and shading.

So for my first post, I decided to recreate comic book pop art! (No particular character in mind)

Products used:
Face

  • L'Oreal Lineur Intense brush tip liquid liner in carbon black
  • Snazaroo face paint in red
Eyes

  • Urban Decay primer potion
  • L'Oreal Infallible eyeshadow in "burst into bloom"
  • L'Oreal Lineur Intense brush tip liquid liner in carbon black
  • Andrea Strip Lashes 15 black
Lips
  • L'Oreal Lineur Intense brush tip liquid liner in carbon black
  • L'Oreal Infallible Lipcolor Compact in crimson
  • NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in milk

Overall this look took about an hour and it was a lot of fun to create!

Welcome!

Hello readers,

Thank you for your interest in my blog! I will be bringing you my own makeup inspired looks and recreations from your favorite comic book characters (and the occasional pop culture character).  I've always had a passion for comic books and makeup, so I figured why not find a way to bring the two together in my own blog!  Some looks might be spot on what the character looks like on paper or film, and some might be looks I've created from color scheme or theme inspiration.  The creative palette is quite expansive.  I will always list the products that I use.  If you have requests, questions, or comments, feel free to contact me by email or leave a comment beneath the post.

xoxo Sam
